Week 4 buried the NFL’s only unbeaten team, ripped two starting receivers out of the AFC’s best offense in the same afternoon and may have ended at least one season before October really got going. For fantasy managers, Sunday produced more waiver-wire urgency than any week since Labor Day.
The Unbeaten Era Is Over
Drake Maye and the Patriots erased Buffalo’s perfect start with a 29-26 road win, the winning points coming on a one-handed touchdown catch by Efton Chism with 1:50 left. Maye finished 22-of-39 for 269 yards and three touchdowns despite a lost fumble and an interception, spreading the ball to Romeo Doubs (two touchdown catches) and Rhamondre Stevenson, who scored on a short run. New England is 2-2, but the final two drives were the best stretch of Maye’s career, and both Doubs and Chism now look like legitimate streaming options in an offense that is clearly building around its young quarterback.
Kansas City’s Receiver Room Is in Shambles
Nothing hit fantasy rosters harder than Kansas City’s 30-27 win over Las Vegas. Rashee Rice left in the first quarter with a hamstring injury and did not return, then Tyquan Thornton suffered a dislocated left ankle late in the game and was carted off after a five-catch, 111-yard, two-touchdown afternoon. Both of the Chiefs’ outside receivers went down in the same game. The injuries have already revived chatter about a reunion with free agent Tyreek Hill, a storyline worth tracking but not yet actionable since Hill remains unsigned. What is actionable: with Rice and Thornton out, snaps shifted to Xavier Worthy (four catches, 70 yards), Jalen Royals, Cyrus Allen and Nikko Remigio, and all three behind Worthy just became more relevant in an offense that still runs through Patrick Mahomes every week.
Washington’s Quarterback Carousel Hits Rock Bottom
Washington’s trip to London turned into a disaster beyond the 30-13 scoreline. With Jayden Daniels already out, backup Marcus Mariota was knocked out on the second drive with a knee injury, forcing third-string rookie Athan Kaliakmanis into his first NFL action. He threw a touchdown pass, but the offense managed just 13 points against Indianapolis. Jonathan Taylor ran through Washington for two touchdowns on 20 carries, and Colts quarterback Daniel Jones added a rushing score of his own. Washington also confirmed that return specialist Jaylin Lane suffered a fractured and dislocated ankle on a kickoff return and is likely done for the season after piling up nearly 400 combined return yards through four games. Every Commanders pass catcher is now tied to a rookie making his first career start, which is reason enough to bench the group until the quarterback situation stabilizes.
Breakouts Worth Building Around
Carolina’s Tetairoa McMillan set a career high with 14 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns in a 32-26 win over Detroit, powering one of Bryce Young’s best pro outings (29-of-41, 329 yards, two touchdowns). In New York, Jameis Winston threw three touchdown passes in his second start filling in for an injured Jaxson Dart, and Malik Nabers posted a season-high 112 yards and a touchdown on six catches before Deonte Banks’ 98-yard pick-six sealed a 36-24 win over Arizona. In Baltimore, Derrick Henry ran for 73 yards and became the first player since Devonta Freeman in 2015 to score seven rushing touchdowns in his team’s first four games, even as the Ravens held on for a 24-18 win over Tennessee without Lamar Jackson for the second half. Jackson left with an ankle injury and underwent an MRI Monday; the early word from Baltimore is that he is day-to-day and hopeful for Week 5 against Atlanta. Tyler Huntley is the handcuff to roster in any league where Jackson is started.
Waiver Wire
- Jalen Royals and Nikko Remigio, WR, Chiefs – top priority adds in the Rice and Thornton fallout. Royals carries the higher snap-share upside behind Worthy; Remigio is a deeper stash in larger leagues.
- Tyler Huntley, QB, Ravens – speculative add while Lamar Jackson’s ankle is evaluated. Not worth rostering if Jackson is confirmed good to go, but priced to stash for free in most leagues.
- Efton Chism and Romeo Doubs, WR, Patriots – both scored in the Bills upset and both play for a quarterback trending up every week. Add Chism first for his role in the two-minute offense.
- Drop or stash carefully: Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton, WR, Chiefs – Thornton’s dislocated ankle looks like a multi-week absence at minimum; do not cut Rice outright but check Wednesday’s practice report before trusting him in a lineup.
- Monitor, don’t panic-drop: Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel, WR, Commanders – the offense is now in the hands of a rookie third-string quarterback. Hold both but expect a down week unless Washington’s quarterback situation improves.
DFS Plays for Week 5
- Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Panthers – his salary has not caught up to a 14-target role in Carolina’s offense.
- Jalen Royals, WR, Chiefs – minimum-priced exposure to a Mahomes offense that just lost both of its outside receivers.
- Jameis Winston, QB, Giants – a cheap value starter who has thrown for three touchdowns in back-to-back starts.
- Avoid the Commanders passing game entirely – Kaliakmanis making his first start is not a lineup to build around in cash games or GPPs this week.
- Jonathan Taylor, RB, Colts – remains a priority building block after a two-touchdown day against a banged-up Washington front.
The waiver wire moves fastest in the 24 hours after a week like this one. Grab the Chiefs depth pieces and the Patriots skill players before your league mates do, and give the Commanders offense a week to sort itself out before trusting anyone wearing burgundy and gold.
