Week 3 delivered the tightest Sunday in NFL history, with 12 of the day’s 14 games decided by one score, and it left a trail of fantasy-relevant injuries that will shape rosters for weeks to come. De’Von Achane is done for the season, Breece Hall and Justin Jefferson both exited early, and Baker Mayfield left Tampa Bay’s loss with a dislocated thumb. Here is what actually happened, and what it means for your Week 4 lineup.
A Slate for the Ages
The Ravens needed a 56-yard Tyler Loop field goal as time expired to beat the Cowboys 34-31 in Rio de Janeiro. The Broncos survived when safety Talanoa Hufanga picked off Matthew Stafford in the end zone to seal a 30-26 win over the Rams. San Francisco held off Arizona 36-30, Detroit beat the Jets 31-24, and Pittsburgh escaped Cincinnati 30-27 on a Derrick Harmon strip-sack. Six teams remain unbeaten through three weeks. But the score sheets were secondary to the injury report.
Achane’s Season Ends, Gordon Takes Over
Dolphins running back De’Von Achane suffered a torn ACL on just his third carry of Sunday’s loss to Kansas City, tackled awkwardly by safety Alohi Gilman. Coach Jeff Hafley said afterward it did not sound optimistic, and it was later confirmed Achane will miss the rest of the season. That is a massive loss off a Pro Bowl campaign, but it hands Ollie Gordon II a clear path to the Miami backfield. Gordon played 83.6 percent of Miami’s snaps the rest of the way and finished with 17 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown, adding three catches on three targets for 14 yards. He entered Sunday with only three total touches through two games, so this is as clean a workload takeover as the waiver wire offers this week.
Hall, Jefferson and Mayfield All Banged Up
Jets running back Breece Hall was ruled out in the fourth quarter of the loss to Detroit with a thigh injury after being tackled and twisted out of bounds near the goal line. He is expected to undergo an MRI, and his outlook for Week 4 against Chicago is uncertain enough that backup Braelon Allen, who caught all three of his targets in relief, is worth rostering in every league.
Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson left Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay early with an ankle injury after catching just two passes for 32 yards. He had not missed a game to injury since 2023. The severity was not yet known as of Monday, so treat his Week 4 status as a watch item rather than a lock either way until Minnesota issues a practice report.
In that same Vikings-Buccaneers game, Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb on a fourth-and-13 throw late in the fourth quarter of a 23-16 loss. Initial X-rays did not show a fracture, but Mayfield was set for an MRI Monday and is considered likely to miss time. Rookie Jalon Daniels took over at quarterback for the final snaps.
Waiver Wire: Top Adds for Week 4
- Ollie Gordon II, RB, Dolphins – top priority add. Miami’s lead back the moment Achane went down, with 83.6 percent of Sunday’s snaps. Worth a top-two waiver claim or significant FAAB in any format.
- Braelon Allen, RB, Jets – speculative add pending Hall’s MRI. Caught all three of his targets in relief and would be an every-week RB2 if Hall sits against Chicago.
- Mack Hollins, WR, Patriots – priority add in PPR. Led New England with nine targets, catching six for 87 yards against Jacksonville, and looks like Drake Maye’s top option. A home matchup with Buffalo’s shootout potential follows.
- Tre’ Harris, WR, Chargers – stash in deeper leagues. Caught six of a team-high seven targets for 76 yards against Buffalo, and the volume trend points up.
- Mike Gesicki, TE, Bengals – streaming option. Scored on 37 yards in Week 3 and has been targeted seven times in a game already this year. Faces Jacksonville next.
- Marcus Mariota, QB, Commanders – two-start streamer. Threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns in Week 3 and gets a home matchup with Indianapolis while Jayden Daniels remains out.
Drop or stash calls follow directly from the injuries above: Achane should be dropped in shallow leagues now that the season-ending designation is official, while Hall owners should hold and simply plug in Allen if Monday’s MRI news is bad. Jefferson owners should not panic-drop a top-five receiver over an ankle injury with an unknown timeline.
DFS Plays: Value and Fades for Week 4
Ollie Gordon II is the clearest value play on the board. His salary will not have caught up to a workload that hit 83.6 percent of Miami’s snaps, which makes him a bell-cow price at a committee-back cost. Mack Hollins profiles the same way at receiver: nine targets and a team-high 87 yards is WR1 usage priced like a depth piece, and it should hold up with Drake Maye throwing to him again. Tre’ Harris is a smaller-field pivot behind the Chargers’ bigger names given a team-leading seven targets of his own.
On the fade side, anything tied to Tampa Bay’s passing game is a risk until there is clarity on Mayfield’s thumb. A rookie quarterback in relief snaps is not a foundation to build DFS lineups around, and Tampa Bay’s pass-catchers lose value if Jalon Daniels opens as the Week 4 starter. Minnesota’s receiving corps carries the same caution flag around Jefferson; either wait for a Wednesday practice report or build around Minnesota’s run game instead.
Between a season-ending injury to one of the league’s more explosive backs and a receiver room in flux in both Tampa Bay and Minnesota, Week 4 rosters are going to look different than they did a week ago. Move fast on Gordon and Hollins before the wider fantasy world catches on, and keep an eye on the Wednesday injury reports for Hall and Jefferson before locking in lineups.
