Week 2 will be remembered less for who won than for who limped off, got carted off, or spent the night in a hospital bed. Kansas City survived an overtime classic at Arrowhead, but the real fantasy story of the weekend was a brutal run of injuries that hit two ascending young quarterbacks, three difference-making receivers, and a projected lead running back all in the span of one Sunday. Here is what happened, what it means for Week 3 lineups, and who is worth adding off the waiver wire right now.

Chiefs Survive an Arrowhead Classic

Patrick Mahomes threw for 382 yards on 32 of 47 passing with three touchdowns and no interceptions as Kansas City beat Indianapolis 33-30 in overtime on Sunday Night Football, improving to 2-0 while the Colts dropped to 0-2. Mahomes spread the scoring around, connecting with Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy and rookie wideout Jalen Royals for touchdowns. The biggest plays of the extra session belonged to Kenneth Walker III, the free agent the Chiefs signed away from Seattle after he won Super Bowl LX MVP. Walker broke off two long runs in overtime that set up Harrison Butker’s game winning 40 yard field goal as time expired.

Two games into the season, Walker looks like exactly the workhorse Kansas City paid for, having been the engine of an offense that ranked near the bottom of the league in rushing a year ago. Kelce, now in his age 36 season, is still Mahomes’ most trusted target in the red zone, and Royals is emerging as a legitimate complement to Worthy on the outside. For fantasy managers, that is three usable Chiefs weapons in an offense that just proved it can win a shootout.

Two Franchise Quarterbacks Go Down

The bigger story for fantasy purposes was the pair of ascending young passers who left their games on Sunday. Washington’s Jayden Daniels dislocated his elbow, the same joint that cost him time a year ago, in the second quarter of a 37-20 loss to Dallas. Marcus Mariota came off the bench and played well in relief, but Washington needs clarity on Daniels’ timeline before fantasy managers can trust the position again, and every skill player in that offense takes a hit until he is back.

In Chicago, Caleb Williams was carted off in the fourth quarter of a 9-3 loss to Minnesota with a non-contact hamstring injury and had an MRI to determine the severity. The initial read is a Grade 1 strain, which is the most encouraging outcome available, but hamstring injuries in mobile quarterbacks have a habit of lingering. Tyson Bagent is next in line if Williams needs time off, a real downgrade for anyone rostering Chicago’s pass catchers.

The Receiver Room Gets Thinner

Green Bay’s Jayden Reed was carted off with a neck injury on the second offensive snap of Sunday’s win over the Jets and was hospitalized overnight for observation. The Packers said Reed had movement in his extremities, and Reed posted afterward that he was doing much better and thanked fans for the support, by far the most important update to come out of the weekend. Fantasy considerations take a back seat to that news, but for lineup purposes it leaves Green Bay’s passing game thinner behind Jordan Love in the short term.

Houston is already without Nico Collins, who was ruled out again with the Grade 1 hamstring strain that has now cost him two straight weeks, and Baltimore was missing Zay Flowers, who aggravated the hamstring issue from his monster Week 1 outing and is considered week to week. Mark Andrews and Rashod Bateman absorbed extra targets in Baltimore’s offense with Flowers sidelined. Las Vegas, meanwhile, worked Brock Bowers out before Sunday’s game against the Chargers but ultimately kept him inactive as he continues to progress from a meniscus trim, with the Raiders now targeting a return against New Orleans.

Backfield Watch: Ekeler’s Injury Looks Serious

Washington’s backfield took a separate hit when Austin Ekeler exited again, with the team reportedly fearing an Achilles injury that would end his season. Joshua Kelley stepped into the early down role in his absence and handled a heavy workload, even if his per carry efficiency did not match the volume. If Ekeler’s injury is confirmed as season ending, Kelley becomes a must add running back in every Washington based fantasy league, and a desperation stream in deeper formats regardless.

Waiver Wire Priorities for Week 3

  • Joshua Kelley, RB, WAS: Immediate lead back value if Ekeler is out long term, and worth a speculative add even before that news is official.
  • Rashod Bateman and Mark Andrews, BAL: Direct beneficiaries of a Zay Flowers absence that could stretch beyond Week 3.
  • Jalen Royals, WR, KC: Hauled in a touchdown from Mahomes and looks like the clearest complementary option to Xavier Worthy in an offense that is throwing the ball well.
  • Tyson Bagent, QB, CHI: A deep league streamer only if Williams sits, but worth a roster spot given how heavily Chicago’s offense can lean on the run when he is under center.

Looking Ahead

Two weeks into the season, the story is as much about survival as production. Kansas City’s backfield overhaul is already paying off, Baltimore and Houston are learning to scheme around missing top receivers, and Washington is staring down the possibility of losing both its starting quarterback and its lead running back in the same week. Fantasy managers who track the injury reports as closely as the box scores will be the ones still standing when the real playoff push begins in December.
