The 2023 final between Ohtani and Trout set the bar for “peak sports,” but the 2026 World Baseball Classic (March 5–17) is shaping up to be even bigger. We are currently in the thick of exhibition games, and the atmosphere in Tokyo, Miami, Houston, and San Juan is already electric.

Here is your ultimate preview of the tournament that officially brings the “World” to the “Series.”

The Layout: Pools and Venues

The tournament format remains the same: four pools of five teams, round-robin play, with the top two from each pool advancing to the single-elimination Quarterfinals.

  • Pool A (San Juan, PR): Puerto Rico, Cuba, Canada, Colombia, Panama.

  • Pool B (Houston, TX): USA, Mexico, Italy, Great Britain, Brazil.

  • Pool C (Tokyo, Japan): Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Australia, Czechia.

  • Pool D (Miami, FL): Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Netherlands, Israel, Nicaragua.

Can’t-Miss “Group of Death” Matchups

🇯🇵 vs. 🇰🇷 (Pool C – Tokyo Dome)

When: March 7

The most intense rivalry in international baseball. Japan is the defending champ, but Korea has revamped their roster with young KBO stars. Expect the Tokyo Dome to literally shake during this game.

🇺🇸 vs. 🇲🇽 (Pool B – Daikin Park, Houston)

When: March 9

A rematch of the 2023 pool play upset where Mexico stunned the U.S. This time, the Americans are bringing Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal to the mound. Houston’s Mexican-American community will make this feel like a road game for Team USA.

🇩🇴 vs. 🇻🇪 (Pool D – loanDepot park, Miami)

When: March 11

The finale of Pool D. This is essentially an All-Star Game. Juan Soto and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. vs. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Luis Arraez. The winner likely avoids a brutal Quarterfinal matchup.

Team Spotlights

Team USA: The “Redemption” Rotation

In 2023, the U.S. had the bats but lacked the arms. In 2026, manager Mark DeRosa has a “Dream Team” staff.

  • The Ace: Paul Skenes. He’s the most feared pitcher on the planet right now.

  • The Captain: Aaron Judge. He’s finally healthy for a WBC and is looking to add an international trophy to his mantle.

Samurai Japan: The Next Wave

Even with Shohei Ohtani limited to DH duties this year as he finishes his pitching rehab, Japan is the favorite.

  • The Stars: Keep an eye on the “White Sox’s own” Munetaka Murakami and the Blue Jays’ Kazuma Okamoto.

  • The Arm: Yoshinobu Yamamoto is the staff leader, but Atsuki Taneichi is the name scouts are buzzing about as the next potential $100M pitcher.

Dominican Republic: “Plátano Power” 2.0

Managed by Albert Pujols, the D.R. is playing with a chip on their shoulder after failing to reach the quarters in ’23.

  • The Lineup: It’s a video game roster. Tatis Jr., Soto, Vlad Jr., and Julio Rodriguez.

  • The X-Factor: Sandy Alcantara is back to his Cy Young form and will anchor the rotation.

3 Bold Predictions

  1. The “Czech” Effect: After winning hearts in 2023, Czechia will pull off a massive upset against Australia or Korea to move into the “contender” conversation.

  2. Home Run Record: Between the thin air in some venues and the sheer power on the D.R. and USA rosters, we will see the record for total tournament home runs shattered by the Semifinals.

  3. The Winner: It’s hard to bet against Japan in Tokyo, but a USA vs. Dominican Republic Final in Miami is the destiny of this tournament. I’m taking the Dominican Republic to win their second title in a 4–3 thriller.

 How to Watch

In the U.S., the games will be split between FOX, FS1, and Fox Deportes. Because of the time zones, Pool C (Tokyo) will be late-night/early-morning viewing, while Pool D (Miami) will be your primetime “Plátano Power” fix.
